Obituary

Barbara Ann Shumaker Kline, 86, of Dillsburg, PA, went home to be with her Lord on May 18th, 2023, after a difficult battle with cancer.  Her beloved husband Jim was at her side.  Barb’s  gentle kindness, constant smile, warm love and compassion will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Barbara was born on May 25th, 1936 to Loy E. Shumaker and Myrtle M Henry Shumaker in the tiny borough of Blain. After Barbara graduated as salutatorian from Blain High School in 1954, she took courses at Central Penn Business College.

Barbara met her high school sweetheart and love of her life Jim at the Ickesburg Theater in 1950.   They married on February 11, 1956 at the Blain United Methodist Church.   Barb and Jim went on to have one daughter, Vickie in 1963.

Over the years, Barbara exercised her exceptional secretarial and organizational skills at a number of businesses and organizations.  She started as a legal secretary for 10 years.   She then took a hiatus to nurture and raise her daughter, Vickie.   She returned to the field and enjoyed working her last  17 years with supportive colleagues at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit.  Barbara retired in 1998.

Barbara was a faithful member of Calvary United Methodist Church of Dillsburg  and a frequent volunteer at New Hope Ministries and the United Methodist Womens’ Thrift Shop. She also was a member of the Bowmansdale Card Club and the Red Hat Society.

While retired, Barb had time to travel with her husband and daughter.  She especially loved visiting the ocean to listen to the surf and watch the waves tumbling against the shore.

At home, she spent peaceful moments working in her garden, sewing, reading books, and listening to classical music.  Barb was also known as an exceptional cook and baker - her pies and cakes will be missed by all.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Richard Shumaker and Alan Shumaker, and her sister Lois Carpenter.

Barbara is survived by her husband and soulmate, James Lee Kline and beloved daughter, Vickie Lynn Kline, and her grandpup Chammy.

A graveside service with immediate family was held on May 24.

A memorial service for family, friends, and coworkers will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, 203 Mumper Lane, Dillsburg, PA 17019, on June 17th, 2023  at 11 AM with family visitation beginning at 10 AM.
