Claude “Powell” Weems, Jr., 76, of Boiling Springs, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
Born in Greeneville, Tennessee, on Christmas Day, December 25, 1947, Powell graduated from Greeneville High School in 1965. He then joined the Air Force, where he served honorably as a machinist repairing jets at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas. After his military service, Powell briefly returned to Tennessee to work for Magnavox before realizing his heart longed for West Texas. He returned there to pursue his education at Texas Tech University, where he met his beloved wife, Jill (Daniel), in May 1974. They married on June 19, 1976, and shared 50 beautiful years together.
Powell graduated from Texas Tech University in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and began his career as an engineer with PPG. This career brought him to Pennsylvania in 1980, where he ultimately retired after a dedicated 39-year tenure.
Powell was known for his kindness, humor and warmth. He was a hard worker and was always busy helping others, well known for being able to fix anything. He was the life of the party and was steady and selfless in all aspects of his life. Powell had a deep passion for golf and enjoyed working on projects around the house that he and Jill built together. As a caretaker and friend to everyone he met, he showed true hospitality to all who crossed his threshold and delighted in cooking special treats for his family and friends. He made a new friend every time he walked out the door, whether it was at the grocery store or on a tropical island during one of his many adventures.
Words can't express how caring and generous Powell was. He never met a stranger and had the remarkable ability to connect with people, making them feel like the most important person in the world. His family is comforted to think that he will be playing golf in heaven, while smiling down and continuing to blanket them with his love.
Powell is survived by his loving wife, Jill; his daughters, Claudia (Eric) Witmer and Christy (Tim) Peterson; his sons, Charlie (Michelle) Weems and Chris Weems; and ten cherished grandchildren: Ty, Carly, Josie, Cameron, Emma, Cadence, Connor, Kavan, Killian, and Tanner.
Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Sr. and Evelyn, and two sisters, Bobbie Foulks and Dee Dee Foulks.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Powell will be held at South Side Deli, Carlisle, PA, on Monday, December 2, from 5-8 PM. Powell’s family invites everyone who knew him to visit, share their good memories and happy stories, and enjoy a bite to eat together. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made through contributions to be used for the PPG Golf League (please make checks payable to Dick Weller, 640 Devonshire Dr., Carlisle, PA 17013 and in the memo line please list PPG Golf League.)
We will keep his spirit alive in our hearts and his memory will always be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
