Emanuel Melachrinos Obituary

Emanuel (Manny) D. Melachrinos departed this life and entered his eternal rest with Jesus on February 3, 2024.

Manny was born on June 23, 1929, in New York City to Demetrios and Argetta Apostilides Melachrinoudis. Manny’s parents were born in Greece, and in 1936 Manny, his sister Danae, and his mother returned to Chios, Greece to visit family. They were unable to return to the US for nearly ten years due to the onset of World War II. Manny attended public schools in Greece. The extreme poverty and hardship of his life in Greece were formative influences. He returned to New York at age 16 and graduated from public high school in Brooklyn. He received the B.S. in Accounting from Wagner College in Staten Island and the M.S. in Business Administration from New York University. During the Korean War from 1952-1954, he served the US army as a translator for the European Theatre of Operations at Message Control Centers in Frankfurt, Germany and Paris, France. Manny shortened his surname from Melachrinoudis to Melachrinos in 1956. From 1956-1978, he was employed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and partner for Glenn Ingram & Co, in the Wall Street area of Manhattan. In 1978, he became a self-employed CPA and continued in this role until his retirement in 2006.

Manny married Phyllis Anne Van Nostrand on December 17, 1955. Together they raised four children and were soulmates during nearly 68 years of marriage. Manny was dedicated to his family and his faith. He and Phyllis lived to serve, being exceptionally generous in supporting church ministries, civic causes, and anyone who was in need. He was technologically savvy, a wise financial steward, an avid outdoorsman, a master gardener and composter, an accomplished woodworker, a stern but loving father, and occasionally, a prankster.

Manny will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his sister Danae Morakis, his children Stephen (Peggy), Andrea (Lynn) Sollenberger, Paul (Michelle), and Laura (Dino) Minoglio, 12 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife Phyllis.
