Joan Potts Obituary

Joan L. Potts, 93, of Dillsburg passed from this life peacefully on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Silver Spring Personal Care Home, Mechanicsburg.

She was born October 12, 1930, in York Springs, PA the daughter of the late Ernest and Marie (Chronister) Miller.

Joan was a graduate of the former York Springs High School where she participated in the marching band orchestra playing the trumpet. She played basketball and was the captain of her team one year. Joan was the last remaining of the six high school classmates of 1948 who formed a circle of friendship all of their lives, trying to get together once a year.

She attended Bob Jones University where she studied voice and piano and sang in the Bob Jones University radio choir. She later worked at Capital Engineering, Farm Bureau Insurance Company, Northern School District and retired as a home health aide.

Joan was a member of Calvary Methodist Church where she was an active member, serving in the United Methodist Women and taught children's church school for twenty years. She was a charter member of the Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society and a member of the York Springs Historical Society.

Joan and her husband Lynn both were instrumental in getting New Hope Ministries in Dillsburg. Both were active and held offices in the center for many years.

Joan and Lynn supplied the first building that housed the first Methodist Thrift Shop on their property on Gettysburg Street in 1955, and later bought for them the first of three Baltimore Street locations when needing larger areas. They both volunteered in the Thrift Shop into their nineties.

Joan loved gardening, flowers, music, cooking, crafts and reading and doing for her family. She arranged beautiful bouquets, always interested in the many trees-all fifty on her small property. She was always hauling a little old lady friend to a doctor, for groceries, to church, etc., and she entertained her many nieces and nephews, whom she loved.

She loved parties, and for her and Lynn's fiftieth wedding anniversary, hosted and fed three hundred friends and family. She also planned the reunions for her high school class.

Joan will be missed by her two sons, Michael (Margy) of Lake George, NY and Edward of Lexington, NC. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Nathan Potts (Destiny) and Morgan Potts and also by great granddaughters, Goldie and Olivia Potts of Lexington, NC. She is also survived by a sister, Mina Heebner, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by the love of her life, Lynn, her only brother Robert Miller and three sisters, Gayle Markowitz, Betty McCauslin, Arlene Stitzel, and daughter in law Molly Potts.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 11:00 am in her church, Calvary Methodist Church, 203 Mumper Lane, Dillsburg, PA . Her family, at her request, will have a graveside burial at their convenience.
