Martha Long Obituary

Martha M. Long died unto the Lord May 6, 2023, at Messiah Village. She was born September 1927 in Lamar Township, Clinton County, PA, to Jesse N. and Mary Book Long. She was reared by God-fearing parents and community. These influences permeated every aspect of her life and gave it direction.

 

She graduated from Mill Hall High School in 1946 and from Lock Haven State College in 1950 with a B.S. in English. In 1964 she earned an M.A. in English from PSU and in 1978, an M.S. in counseling from Shippensburg.

 

Martha (Martie) made teaching her lifetime career. She taught in her home schools for 4 years; at the Brethren in Christ Navajo Mission School for 4 years; 2 years in Southern Rhodeisa (Zimbabwe); 2 1/2 years at Cumberland Valley Junior High; and 29 years at Messiah College. In 1987 she represented the College while teaching at Daystar  University in Nairobi.

 

She is survived by her brother, Reverend Richard L. Long of Mechanicsburg, 6 nieces, and 7 nephews. She was predeceased by Aunt Esther Ebersole, siblings J. Nathan, Alden M., Edna Long Kreider, our cousins Jerry, Rosalie, Barry, and Rob.

 

Martha was a member of Grantham Brethren in Christ Church. She served as a deacon from 1978-2011. She was Vice President and then President of the Messiah Village Auxiliary from 1993-1997. She volunteered for Hospice of Central PA for 27 years. She had number of articles published in the Evangelical Visitor and Brethren in Christ Historical Journal.

 

Aunt Martha and Aunt Esther were women of God and refined like gold. They were clothed in fine linen and purple; strength and dignity. 

 

Her family is grateful for kindness and skill bestowed to Aunt Martha, by the Nittany Neighborhood care staff and Hospice of Central PA. Martha's funeral service will be Saturday, May 20 at 11:00 AM in Grantham Church, 421 Grantham Road, Mechanicsburg 17055 with a visitation one hour prior.  A fellowship meal will follow the service.
