Shirley Elaine Crum

Shirley Elaine Crum, of Dillsburg, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 29th, 2020.

Shirley was born to Homer I. and Bertie (Schlegel) Hartman in Berrysburg, PA on June 15th, 1935. She graduated from Lykens Valley Joint Vocational Agricultural High School in Berrysburg in 1953 as valedictorian of her class. She married her high school sweetheart, Dale Crum and celebrated over 65 years of loving marriage and partnership together.

Shirley loved Jesus. She was a life-long member of various churches, including Hope Grace Church, Dillsburg most recently. She loved Bible Study, mission and outreach projects and sharing the saving grace of Jesus in her daily life.

Shirley loved music. She was an excellent pianist playing for many groups over the years, including being organist of her home church in Berrysburg as a young woman. She always sang harmony as a member of many church choir’s alto sections. Shirley loved volunteering. Over the years, she gave thousands of hours to groups like Boy/Girl Scouts, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, Steadfast Chapter #479 O.E.S., Bethany Village and many church mission, education and outreach activities.

Shirley loved knitting. She was an exceptional knitter and a member of the Pa. Knitter’s Guild. She taught beginner and expert classes and was known for sharing her gifts to organizations such as local hospital NICUs, prayer shawl ministry, hats for international babies and sweaters for penguins affected by the oil spills.

Shirley loved her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers H. Earl & Dean S. Hartman, her sisters Arlene Matter & Eleanor Hartman, infant sister Clarise and her granddaughter, Kate Sweely.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Dale Crum of Dillsburg, son Douglas (Deb) Crum of Hummelstown, daughter Lori Sweely (Douglas) of Annapolis, MD, grandson Kurt (Heidi) Sweely of Gambrills, MD, great-granddaughter Cara Sweely and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Dale and Shirley Crum of Dillsburg on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Hope Grace Church, 110 Old York Road, Dillsburg, PA. A Masonic Service will be performed at the beginning of the celebration which all are welcome to attend.  Internment held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
