W. Marlene Nelson Obituary

W. Marlene (Durston) Nelson, a loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, and passionate community volunteer, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 92. She was the cherished wife of the late Carl W. Nelson.

Marlene was born on July 2, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska. The daughter of Florence Capp Durston and E. Earle Durston, Marlene grew up in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. A 1950 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School, Marlene worked at the U.S. Navy Depot. She was also active in the Harrisburg Little Theater, where she developed a lifelong love of the arts and community engagement.

In 1960, Marlene married Carl W. Nelson, and together they built a beautiful life centered on family and service. Marlene dedicated herself to raising their three children: Todd D. Nelson (Mary Ann), Timothy D. Nelson (Una), and Amy L. Nelson (Gary Kaschak). She was also a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren: Jordan Nelson (Lauren), Jonathan Nelson (Kristin Coffey), Christian Kaschak (Heather), Victoria Nelson, Caroline Kaschak, Joseph Nelson, and Matthew Nelson. Marlene was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to Rosemary Nelson.

Marlene’s impact was felt far beyond her immediate family. In 1966, she became a founding member and the first president of the York White Rose Mothers of Twins Club, a group that provided not only support but lasting friendships. Marlene’s leadership extended to the national Mothers of Twins Club, where she served as an officer and was an advocate for the challenges and joys of raising multiple children.

In 1972, Marlene ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, an effort that, though unsuccessful, reflected her strong commitment to public service. She continued to be deeply involved in local politics, becoming an active member of the York County Democratic Society. In 2001, she was honored as Democrat of the Year. Marlene was also a dedicated member of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women and was named Woman of the Year by the York County Chapter in 2010.

Her commitment to service was evident in her volunteerism. Marlene was an active Lioness in the Weigelstown Lions Club. She also served as secretary of the West Manchester Mall Walkers and volunteered for numerous ministries at Shiloh Evangelical Lutheran Church, including Feed the Hungry, Dover New Hope, and the Literacy Council. Together with Carl, she volunteered for more than 25 years at the Strand Capitol Theater, where they formed lasting friendships.

Marlene’s greatest joy, however, was in her family. A devoted mother and grandmother, she never missed a school or sporting event and continued that tradition as her grandchildren grew. She was a constant presence in their lives, attending their activities and offering love and support unconditionally.

In her free time, Marlene was an accomplished crafter, creating ceramics, heirloom blankets, macrame chairs, and woven baskets—beautiful works of art that will continue to be cherished by her family for generations. Her creativity extended beyond her hands to her heart, and she poured love into everything she made.

Marlene’s adventurous spirit took her on many journeys, from local road trips to epic cross-country adventures and international tours. She was curious by nature and an avid reader, a passion she shared with her children. Marlene’s warm presence and loving heart touched everyone she met. She had a unique ability to make others feel valued and accepted, offering kindness, compassion, and unconditional love without judgment.

Marlene’s legacy of love, service, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, as well as many dear friends. Her life was a testament to the power of family, community, and love, and she will be dearly missed.

A celebration of Marlene’s life will be held at Shiloh Evangelical Lutheran Church on Monday, January 27, 2025,  at 10:30 am with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Marlene’s honor to the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N George Street, York,  PA 17401; Shiloh Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2201Church Road, York, PA 17408 or the York County Libraries, 159 E Market Street, York, PA 17401  ( https://www.yorklibraries.org/donate-now/ ).
